From its inception, The End and the Beginning was meant to be the most hopeful and acoustic-sounding Drownbeat album yet, and that is exactly what it has become. Unlike the first two Drownbeat releases, which utilized many different songwriters and vocalists, The End and the Beginning was written by only two people: Dan Milligan and Bill Acuña of Chicago’s Despotic Hall of Fame. In addition, the lengthy list of performers was replaced with a small group of musicians, giving it a much more intimate and band-like feeling than the first two albums. And while it’s not necessarily a “concept album” in the traditional sense, the songs on the album are very tightly bound together with a common theme. The result is Drownbeat’s most consistent musical offering to date.

Blue linstock / white sulphur / the sunrise started with a spark Red silver uncovered the wood ash that walked upon the wind The heavens above embraced the embers the crackle of sticks asynchronous Cradle and carve the germination staccato and stark in isolation deliver the fuels that brought us here to exorcise the oxygen The end and the beginning, perpetuate progress So beat the bell till no one rests and caution us all, and caution us all Imagine bright angels sent down to weld a forest floor Devoid of discernment, surrounded by intensity Flashover again, flashpoints and fanning like crowning a void, too volatile Challenged until we heard the sound the wind spun round to ventilate Whenever we want a conflagration Caught in a race of negative space deliver the fuels that brought us here to suffocate the oxygen The end and the beginning perpetuate progress So beat the bell till no one rests and caution us all, and caution us all The end and the beginning perpetuate progress so ring the bell till no one rests, it wasn’t our fault, it wasn’t our fault

We woke up to the noise, from the chaos and the fright We smelled the smoke drift by, then our neighbors told us why We climbed familiar paths up the hill that kept us safe from the valley next to ours to see what could be saved Drained of color / fields of nothing All mistakes upon display and framed in grey Bereft of shelter / the lifeless heather A road with no end is an invitation to stay We felt the heat persist from the coals within our midst That heap and creep like tides and slowly bend the light And so we turned our backs and scaled familiar paths Deliberate and tired, we breathed the scattered sighs Drained of color / fields of nothing All mistakes upon display and framed in grey Bereft of shelter / the lifeless heather A home with no peace is an invitation to stray The valley echoed back the sound of orphan branches falling down Return it to the burning ground, and dancing ashes all around

When my eyes grew tired, turned from blue to red I would rest them on your softest head Now our lives have changed, gone from day to night Never giving up in our endless fights All the ups & downs in our day to day All the sudden shouts and the screams exhaled Choose your words carefully ‘cos I fear just what you’ll say Let’s not waste our time in this worthless game We can start again If we give a little time to make things right our love will grow again Once you promised me all my heart desired And you swore to me that you’d treat me right Now your words have changed, gone from truth to lies Never adding up, not one verified What we’ve given up, what we still do need How I felt inside when you wounded me If said anything it’s really not what it seemed Life is wasting time in apologies We can start again If we give a little time to make things right our love will grow again If I wanted wings that would scale the heights Would you hold them back? Would you stop my flight? But you grounded me and my willingness Wings can’t carry us, only love and faith Cannot breathe when we’re always on attack Cannot love someone who won't love me back How can I trust anything or guess what you mean? But you burned us down, burned our history We can start again If we give a little time to make things right our love will grow again

White beads that whistle thru the sylvan sparkle dust Vermillion shoots that scatter scarlet sand and penny rust Dead rot on roots with crusted muddy filigree The frantic fingers feel the holy entropy They reach up toward the sun, grasping toward its shape Awoken by above, nostalgia in the stains They reach up toward the sky, confused by sleeves of light That echo back the shine, renewal by design Unraveled slips that chase their place below the melted moss They whisper tales of secret lies, pathetic loss The sting of separation and of phantom pain shake the burden of the murders with the nascent gains They reach up toward the sun, grasping toward its shape Awoken by above, nostalgia in the stains They reach up toward the sky, confused by sleeves of light The wonder and the shine, renewal by design

Stretch your shadow and see your shape betray watch it slowly recoil when you shift your weight Now bring a dozen others to build a ring of cover for the ground Surround and drown the sunlight and stand up in a circle arm-in-arm Whether we try or not we learn the earth won’t stop When the night comes to chase the fools away They bow their heads in shame and whither to the blame Forever with its spinning we all get the feeling that we are lost In and out of season distant hidden reason throws us off Whether we try or not we learn the earth won’t stop It’s only temporary, this belief we possess So unnecessary, this belief to possess
6.
When the light broke the treeline in two with catkins flying the white eclipsed the blue The dawn uncovered, a field burst over night of cold wet tulips competing for the light Remember that feeling when it comes back again You’ll see it all revealing like a smile from a friend Every morning is a promise and a story to be told There is hope in the new day and a challenge to unfold Never mind who owns the world, we are rich in our souls With the legs of optimism we will walk until we’re whole Then the grass warmed and spread a hazy steam and filled our senses with fragrance from the scene Crickets called out their neighbors from the stream with bullfrogs joining the vernal symphony Can we hang these moments on loops that never end? ‘Cos this one barely started then repeats itself again Every morning is a promise and a story to be told There is hope in the new day and a challenge to unfold Never mind who owns the world, we are rich in our souls With the legs of optimism we will walk until we’re whole

Uncover everything, reveal a newer green Or a scarless green without memories Ability to Breathe in a new belief It hastens to repeat like it’s never been The beauty lies before our eyes in what has changed yet stayed the same The beauty lies before our eyes in what has changed yet stayed the same We were there when the smoke appeared, now it’s back to life and better than before We were there we saw it disappear, now the light’s returned to feed the charging flowers Correction cultivates, feel it shape our fate Erase our darker tastes and our worst mistakes The elements and breath that feed this verdant crest over crush the breast and joyfully protect The beauty lies before our eyes in what has changed yet stayed the same The beauty lies before our eyes in what has changed yet stayed the same Once the trees were white, tall skeletons at night They loomed above our heads, luminary sprites at rest We were there when the smoke appeared, now it’s back to life and better than before We were there, we saw it disappear, now the light’s returned to feed the charging flowers We were there when the smoke appeared, now it’s back to life and blooming back the hours We were there we saw it disappear, now the light’s returned to feed the charging flowers

Lost 05:40
Let’s get lost and make our getaway Somewhere far beyond this tired place A cottage town near a solemn lake The wind spins round to open the gate Unravel a road like a cat with a string Follow the fields to horizons unseen You cannot go back to your favourite dreams and make them real Rattle the trail of the dust in our wake in merciful twists of intractable faith to welcome the calls that arrest and awake, all we need Trust in me imperfect architect Who builds belief with nothing to protect Sculptor’s dream an image to connect To ideas and perception effects Unravel a road like a cat with a string Follow the fields to horizons unseen You cannot go back to your favourite dreams and make them real Rattle the trail of the dust in our wake in merciful twists of intractable faith to welcome the calls that arrest and awake, all we need
